The people who give heart & soul to cancer care

 Heidi Oberst, RT(T)(R), Chief Therapist

Heidi Oberst, RT(T)(R), Chief Therapist - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"In an X-ray you only see a patient once and you never know what happened to them. In radiation oncology, you get to develop a relationship with each patient and see them in follow-up. Each patient has a different personality and their own way of needing to be treated, depending on their cancer. I try to empathize with each patient and meet their needs. If they need extra time to talk, I listen. Patience is a good quality to have in this profession."

Heidi enjoys her three rescue dogs, reading, cross-stitch, walking and traveling.

 Betta Duffy, RT(T)(R)

Betta Duffy, RT(T)(R) - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"My mom was a breast cancer survivor and I found the medical field to be very interesting. I entered the Radiation Therapy program to have continued interaction with patients. I am friendly, caring and informative with each patient and treat them with dignity and respect as I would want my family to be treated. I genuinely care about each patient and aim to extend positive encouragement throughout the course of treatment."

Betta enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren, crocheting, golfing, art and is actively involved with Mercy Home for Boys & Girls.

 Andrea Smith, BS, RT(T)

Andrea Smith, BS, RT(T) - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"I didn't know what I was getting myself into. All I wanted was to go to college close to home. What I found was my true calling in radiation oncology. I love the fact that I can really get to know my patients. Seeing them for so many weeks makes it much easier to connect on a human level. I hope to be a little bright spot during a hard time in their lives. I try to make the experience a little less scary and a little more fun. I listen when they need me to just listen."

In her free time, Andrea loves scrap-booking, photography, bow-making, reading and cross-stitch.

 Lisa Appelt, BS, RT(T)

Lisa Appelt, BS, RT(T) - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"I always wanted a job in the healthcare field so I could help and try my best to 'fix' people. In radiation oncology, I get to be part of the patient's daily life, even if only for 15-20 minutes. I get to create a bond with them and let them know how much I care. I am upbeat and smile a lot, and I'm always ready to listen. I hope to give patients reassurance and make them as comfortable as possible. I always look for the positive in situations. So if I can brighten someone's day even a little – I'm happy!"

In her free time, Lisa enjoys making memories with her four children and husband, as well as reading and scrap-booking.

 Donna Bauml, RT(T)

Donna Bauml, RT(T) - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"Radiation therapy gives me the chance to use both my technical and patient-care skills in an extremely rewarding profession. I found it extraordinary how we can use science and technology to cure cancer. I had to be a part of it! What's most rewarding today is seeing so many patients come back for follow-ups healthy and happy. What a gift to be part of that! I get to see patients for several weeks and form relationships that are both professional and personal. They come in as patients and leave as friends.

"I have had close family members and friends go through radiation therapy and it has given me a better understanding of how they feel and how I can help. I hope to give them peace, hope and health."

In her spare time, Donna maintains a busy schedule with an active family, volunteering for school activities and sports, traveling, reading and bike-riding.

 Samantha Follstad, RT(T)

Samantha Follstad, RT(T) - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"I sought a career in radiation therapy after experiencing cancer in my family. I wanted to be able to provide compassionate support, emotionally and physically, to patients and their families. I love being able to see my patients every day and building a personal relationship with them. I am very flexible and adapt fashion of patient care to each person and their needs. I hope to give them a positive experience and make their time here as enjoyable as possible."

In addition to her charitable work for Ronald McDonald House and Feed My Starving Children Organization, Samantha loves to watch the Packers, walk her dogs and travel.

 Tomas Herrera, RT(T), CMD

Tomas Herrera, RT(T), CMD - Lindenhurst, Gurnee, IL"Becoming a dosimetrist fascinated me as a career because it gave me the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology and interact with people. I take pride in being the bridge between technology and medical treatment. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to implement always-changing technology to develop effective treatment plans for patients. Using technology to help give patients more time with their loved ones makes my job that much more special for me."
